BLAKE, William, Dichter, Maler und Kupferstecher, * 28.11. 1757 in London als Sohn eines wohlhabenden Wirkwarenhändlers, † daselbst 12.8. 1827. - B. besuchte seit 1767 die Zeichenschule, kam 1772 zu einem Kupferstecher in die Lehre und trat 1779 in die Kunstschule der Royal Academy ein. Er illustrierte zahlreiche Werke vergangener und zeitgenössischer Autoren, u. a. Dantes »Göttliche Komödie«, das Buch Hiob, Edward Youngs »Night Thoughts«, Robert Blairs »The grave« und R. J. Thorntons »Virgil«, und schuf eigene Illustrationen zu seinen phantastisch-allegorischen Dichtungen und prophetischen Visionen seiner mystischen Welt. Seine lyrischen Gedichte sind von unvergleichlicher Schönheit. Als Dichter begründete B., der in vielem den Mystikern verwandt war und nicht nur zu Jakob Böhme und Emanuel Swedenborg, sondern auch zum Neuplatonismus Beziehungen hatte, eine eigene Mythologie. Seine Spätdichtungen sind durch Mystizismus und übersteigerte Symbolik schwer zugänglich. B. führte ein armes und einsames Leben. Trotz mancher Bewunderer und Förderer war er verkannt und blieb unbeachtet. Längst vergessen, wurde B. erst um die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts von den Präraffaeliten Dante Gabriel Rossetti und Algernon Charles Swinburne wiederentdeckt.
