TOLKIEN, John Ronald Reuel, katholischer Schriftsteller, Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaftler, * 3.1. 1892 in Bloemfontein (Südafrika), † 22.9. 1973 in Bournemouth. - Die Kindheit T.s war geprägt durch den frühen Tod der Eltern; sein Vater Arthur Reuel starb 1896 in Südafrika, seine Mutter Mabel 1904 in Birmingham. Noch vor dem Tod Arthurs war Mabel mit ihren beiden Söhnen aus gesundheitlichen Gründen nach Birmingham gezogen, wo sie diese zunächst selber unterrichtete, bis sie eine grammar school besuchen konnten. Nach der Konversion der Mutter z. Katholizismus 1900 wurden die beiden Söhne katholisch erzogen, nach ihrem Tod wurde Father Francis Morgan, ein katholischer Priester aus dem von John Henry Newman gegründeten Oratorium in Birmingham, deren Vormund. Zeit seines Lebens war T. praktizierender Katholik mit ausgeprägter Spiritualität und Frömmigkeit. Schon während seiner Kindheit und Schulzeit zeigt sich seine Begeisterung für Sprachen, so erfand er schon sehr früh eine eigene Sprache, und seine literarische Begabung, die sich in mehreren Gedichten niederschlug. Nach der Schulzeit studierte T. zunächst Klassische Philologie, später englische Philologie in Oxford. Während des Ersten Weltkrieges legte er im Sommer 1915 die Abschlußprüfung in englischer Sprache und Literatur mit Auszeichnung ab, anschließend wurde er zu den Lancashire Fusiliers einberufen. 1914 verlobte er sich mit Edith Bratt; sie heirateten im März 1916. Im Juni wurde er in Frankreich eingesetzt und nahm an der Schlacht an der Somme als Fernmeldeoffizier teil. Dabei erkrankte er an Grabenfieber und kehrte zur Genesung nach England zurück. Während eines Genesungsurlaubs in Great Haywood begann er neben Gedichten auch mythologische Geschichten zu schreiben, die "Books of Lost Tales", die die Grundlage für seine spätere Mythologie (ein großer Teil der späteren Fassungen wurde von seinem Sohn Christopher in "The Silmarillion" veröffentlicht) bilden sollten. Die Arbeit an diesen und anderen Geschichten sollte einen Großteil seiner Arbeitszeit in Anspruch nehmen. 1917 wurde sein erster Sohn John geboren, der katholischer Priester wurde. Nach dem Kriegsende kehrte er mit seiner Familie nach Oxford zurück und arbeitete am New Englisch Dictionary. 1920 wurde er Reader in English Language an der Universität in Leeds und sein zweiter Sohn Michael geboren. Die Universität Leeds richtete 1924 eigens für T. eine Professur für englische Sprache ein, ein Jahr später wurde er zum Rawlinson- und Bosworth-Professor für Angelsächsisch in Oxford gewählt. Sein Sohn Christopher wurde 1924, seine Tochter Priscilla 1929 geboren. Während dieser Zeit arbeitete er immer wieder an den Geschichten des Silmarillion, gegen 1930 begann er auch "The Hobbit" zu schreiben. In den dreißiger und vierziger Jahren war Tolkien wie C.S. Lewis und Charles Williams Mitglied der "Inklings", eines Kreises christlicher Denker und Autoren. "The Hobbit" wurde 1936 fertiggestellt, vom Verlag Allen & Unwin zur Veröffentlichung angenommen und erschien 1937. Nach dessen Erfolg schrieb Tolkien an einer Fortsetzung, aus der "The Lord of the Rings" wurde. 1945 wurde er z. Merton-Professor für englische Sprache und Literatur in Oxford gewählt. 1949 war "The Lord of the Rings" abgeschlossen. Aufgrund längerer Verlagsverhandlungen erschienen die ersten beiden Bände erst 1954, der dritte 1955. Dieses Werk verkaufte sich sehr gut, zum Kultautor unter Studenten wurde T. in den 60er Jahren durch eine nicht autorisierte Taschenbuchausgabe in den USA. Nach öffentlichem Protest zog der Verlag diese Ausgabe zurück und beteiligte T. am Gewinn. Nach seiner Pensionierung 1959 arbeitete er weiter an seiner Mythologie, die er bis zu seinem Tod nicht abschließen sollte, und zog 1968 mit seiner Frau in die Nähe von Bournemouth, kehrte aber nach dem Tod Ediths 1971 nach Oxford zurück. Bei einem Besuch bei Freunden in Bournemouth starb T 1973. T. erhielt verschiedene Ehrungen, so u.a. 1954 Ehrendoktorate der Universitäten Dublin und Lüttich, 1972 eines der Universität Oxford sowie im selben Jahr den C.B.E. - 1) T. ist primär als Schriftsteller, vor allem durch "The Hobbit" und "The Lord of the Rings" bekannt, doch darf seine Bedeutung als Sprach- und Literaturwissenschaftler nicht unterschätzt werden. Aufgrund seiner hohen wissenschaftlichen Kompetenz früh Professor geworden, machte er sich mit E.V. Gordon als Übersetzer und Herausgeber von "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" einen Namen; diese Edition ist in einer bearbeiteten Neuauflage noch heute gebräuchlich. Ebenfalls ein Standardwerk war das 1922 veröffentlichte "Middle-English Vocabulary". Auch die späteren Editionen des "Ancrene Wisse" sowie posthum des "Old English Exodus" sowie seine verschiedenen Artikel zur englischen Philologie und Literaturwissenschaft zeigen seine akademische Bedeutung, auch wenn sie aufgrund seiner schriftstellerischen Tätigkeit nicht sehr zahlreich sind. Zur Neuübersetzung der Jerusalem Bible sollte er einen großen Anteil beitragen, konnte aber wegen großer Arbeitsbelastung nur das Buch Jona übersetzen. Sein 1936 über das altenglische Epos "Beowulf" gehaltener Vortrag "Beowulf: The Monster and the Critics" gilt als Meilenstein der Forschung über dieses Werk und wird oft als die einflußreichste Arbeit über den Beowulf angesehen. Darin plädiert T. für eine Untersuchung dieses Epos als Literatur und nicht als historische Quelle, wie der Forschungstrend zu dieser Zeit war und kann damit einen Paradigmenwechsel der Beowulf-Forschung initiieren. Die von ihm vertretene Deutung wird heute noch oft vertreten. Weite Beachtung fand auch sein Essay "On Fairy-Stories" (1938), der heute noch in seiner Bedeutung für die Märchentheorie gewürdigt wird, wenn T. sich darin auch weitgehend unberührt von der zeitgenössischen Märchentheorie zeigt. Für das Verständnis seiner eigenen narrativen Werke ist dieser Essay höchst aufschlußreich. Darin beschäftigt sich T. mit dem Wesen phantastischer Geschichten, entfaltet sein Konzept der ‚sub-creation' des Künstlers (in Analogie zur Schöpfung Gottes). So soll Kunst als sub-creation die Visionen der Phantasie unmittelbar wirksam werden lassen. In diesem Essay prägt T. auch den Begriff ‚Eukatastrophe' zur Kennzeichnung einer guten Wendung, als Inbegriff einer Eukatastrophe sieht T. die Geburt Christi an. 2) Seine große schriftstellerische Bekanntheit - seine Werke wurden in zahlreiche Sprachen übers. und millionenfach verkauft - erlangte er vor allem mit den beiden in der Phantasiewelt Mittelerde spielenden Werken "The Hobbit" und "The Lord of the Rings", die nicht exakt einem literarischen Genre zugeordnet werden können. Sie gehören prinzipiell zur Fantasyliteratur, unterscheiden sich indes von der bis dahin bekannten deutlich und bilden damit einen Neuansatz. Dadurch und wegen starker Anlehnungen späterer Autoren an seine Werke gilt T. oft als Begründer und Wegbereiter der modernen Fantasy. Die Phantasiewelt Mittelerde wurde von T. mit einer umfangreichen Mythologie und mehreren ausgearbeiteten Sprachen ausgestattet. Die Entwürfe dazu und zahlreiche damit zusammenhängende Texte sowie die Entstehungsgeschichte des "The Lord of the Rings" hat sein Sohn Christopher im Laufe der Jahre mit "The Silmarillion", "Unfinished Tales" sowie der zwölfbändigen "History of Middle-earth" herausgegeben. Neben diesen Werken schrieb T. auch einige kürzere Geschichten und Erzählungen, darunter auch Kinderbücher, teilweise mit autobiographischem Akzent. Den Nährboden für T.s Geschichten bildet seine berufliche Beschäftigung mit mittelalterlicher Sprache und Literatur, sein berufliches wie persönliches Selbstverständnis wurde durch seine akademische Arbeit geprägt. So orientieren sich manche Gedichte oder Werke an mittelalterlichen Vorlagen, bei zahlreichen Themen oder Motiven finden sich Parallelen zu mittelalterlichen Quellen. Auch wenn T. nie so explizit christlich bzw. religiös in seinen narrativen Werken war wie z.B. sein Freund C.S. Lewis in den "Narnia Chronicles", kann T.s christlicher Hintergrund an vielen Stellen bemerkt werden, ohne aufdringlich zu sein. Dabei werden auch seine theologischen Ansichten deutlich, die neuscholastisch geprägt sind, aber oft darüber hinaus weisen.
